What if Lightning Starts a Fire in My Home?
Lightning-related fires are more common in June through August and in the late afternoon and evening. Peak seasons for lightning-related fires vary by region, as do weather patterns in general. If lightning strikes your home and causes a fire, evacuate immediately and call 911. Once the fire is put out, you will most likely have fire as well as water damage. There are a few things you should not do after a fire to help keep you and your family safe.
- Don't attempt to clean any electrical appliances that may have been close to fire, heat, or water without consulting an authorized repair service.
- Don't use any canned or packaged food or beverages that may have been stored near the fire, heat, or water.
- Don't turn on ceiling fixtures if the ceiling is wet. The wiring may be damaged.
