Fire Safety: The Importance of Fire Drills in Mercer Schools
11/11/2019 (Permalink)
Safety is the number one priority in school districts. Teaching preparedness and safety procedures is not only necessary in schools but it is also a legal requirement.
Fire drills are necessary for schools’ staff to review plans with their students at the beginning of the school year.
Young students should be told when there is a drill and taught to familiarize themselves with the sounds of the alarms and the procedures necessary to evacuate the building smoothly and safely.
During fire drills, students have the opportunity to become aware of the building layout. When educating young learners, it is the responsibility of the staff and administration to educate and prepare for when a disaster may strike.
Fire drills provide the opportunity to reduce panic and increase confidence when preparing for the unexpected.
Consistency and communication are key when conducting fire drills. Communicating with your local fire department is beneficial during an emergency and also builds strong community relations.
