High winds can be disastrous, especially when it affects your home. Almost every homeowner has experienced power to their home going out due to high winds. Winds that go up to 100 mph, such as hurricane winds, are not the only winds that can cause damage. If there are strong winds in the area you live, chances are your neighbors will be affected too. We have all heard stories about how trees can possibly fall on your roof during a windstorm, and it is not uncommon. Furthermore, it is really a good idea to trim nearby trees or branches that could potentially fall on your home during a storm. If the tree is not on your property, consider discussing the situation with your neighbor.

Many people are unaware that you can prepare for a storm such as this. However, with a few simple checks and steps, you are on your way to reducing the damage that any possible windstorm could create. The first thing you can check to make sure they are secure during a windstorm are your doors! Doors with three hinges and are tightly secured with a deadbolt are what you will be looking for. In addition, garage doors made of steel and have reinforced struts are essential to an area prone to windstorm. Unplug electronics from the wall and secure all loose items, indoors and outdoors. For example, make sure to secure a tarp over your woodpile outside or move all toys, potted plants and patio furniture into your basement or garage. These simple preventative measures may seem tedious; however, they can truly prevent damage to your home and vehicles.
